Rules for sport fishing in Amsterdam
If you go fishing in Amsterdam, you have to deal with laws and regulations. Think of permits, closed times for bait and fish, minimum sizes and protected species. Even night fishing has separate rules. If you do not comply with the rules, you risk a fine.
Always required: VISpas or Day permit AHV
To be allowed to fish in inland waters, written permission is always required from the fishing rights holder, the Amsterdam Fishing Association (AHV). You can apply for this VISpas here: https://ahv.nl/product/vispas
If you go fishing in Amsterdam with a fishing guide, for example fishing guide Juul Steyn, then this fishing guide can write out a day permit for you. You can also buy a day permit yourself at the fishing tackle shop Hengelsport 2000.
Rules for Bait and Fish Species
Allowed bait:
- Think of bread, boilies, worms, maggots, grains and small artificial flies (max. 2.5 cm)

- Between April 1st and the last Saturday in May you are not allowed to use dead fish or artificial bait (except artificial flies < 2.5 cm).

- Pike-perch and perch : April 1st to the last Saturday in May.
Taking fish
You may take home a maximum of 2 pike-perch between 55 cm and 70 cm for consumption per fishing day. It is prohibited to take pike or carp. Both types of fish must be returned to the same water immediately.
Important: Due to the risk of extinction, you are not allowed to take eels. All caught eels must be returned to the water immediately.
Good Fisherman = Responsible Fisherman
In addition to laws, there are codes of conduct for anglers. These are the most important:
- Make sure the fish does not swallow the hook.
- Only touch a fish with wet hands.
- Remove hooks carefully.
- Return the fish to the water as quickly as possible.
- Do not use lead if it is not necessary. Choose environmentally friendly alternatives.
